Three Alabama Men’s Golfers Set to Compete at the 2020 U.S. Amateur Championship

Canon Claycomb, Wilson Furr and Thomas Ponder will tee off the 120th U.S. Amateur on Monday
BANDON, Ore. – Three Alabama men's golfers will compete at the 120th United States Amateur Championship, which opens play on Monday morning. Senior Wilson Furr along with sophomores Canon Claycomb and Thomas Ponder, will represent the Crimson Tide at the at this year's event, which will be played on the par 72, 7,217-yard Bandon Dunes Golf Club course.
Furr will tee off Monday's opening round at 10:39 a.m. CT, with both Ponder (2:41 p.m. CT) and Claycomb (4:20 p.m. CT) competing later in the afternoon. Alabama assistant coach Jon Howell will also be representing the Crimson Tide program as he will serve as Ponder's caddy.
"I'm excited for Wilson, Thomas and Canon," Alabama head coach Jay Seawell said. "They are getting an opportunity to play in our national amateur. It's a great honor for them and for our golf program as well."
Because of health and safety concerns, the USGA was forced to cancel all qualifying and resort to an all-exempt field. The Crimson Tide represent three of the 264 competitors in this year's field. Furr (2016, 2017, 2019) will be playing in his fourth U.S. Am when he tees off Monday. Claycomb (2017) will compete for the second time, while Ponder will make his debut in the prestigious event. Both Claycomb and Ponder also competed in the 2019 U.S. Junior Amateur.
This year's tournament opens with 18 holes of stroke play on both Monday and Tuesday, with the low 64 scorers advancing to match play, which begins on Wednesday, Aug. 12. Round of 32 and round of 16 match play will take place on Thursday, Aug. 13, followed by the quarterfinal (Aug. 14) and semifinal (Aug. 15) action. The event will conclude on Sunday, Aug. 16 with the 36-hole championship match.
