The rising sophomore claimed the 2020 crown with a birdie on the first playoff hole
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Alabama men's golfer Canon Claycomb used a birdie on the first playoff hole to defeat defending champion Austin Fulton of Mississippi State and win the 2020 Rice Planters Amateur which was played on the par 72, 6,834-yard Snee Farm Country Club.
"Winning this week is a huge moment in my career," Claycomb said. "This was my first amateur event win and to do it on the first playoff hole just means so much to me.
"I really think that my first year at Alabama helped prepare me for this event. I wouldn't have won it if it weren't for the help of my coaches and teammates. They helped me get to this point and I can't thank them enough. Winning as an individual is great, but I can't wait to win with my teammates by my side. I'm super honored to be this year's champion and I am very excited for the fall season to get here."
Claycomb, a rising sophomore, played well all week and finished the 54-hole event with a 12-under par 204 after carding three consecutive rounds of 4-under par 68. He and Fulton (70-66-68) finished atop the leaderboard, one stroke better than Auburn's Graysen Huff (205).
"I am very proud of Canon for winning his first amateur tournament," Alabama head coach Jay Seawell said. "He is someone who has worked extremely hard during this break and the results are starting to show. I know winning an event of this caliber that is full of elite golfers will only give him more confidence as he continues playing this summer. His confidence will also give us confidence moving forward toward the fall season."
Claycomb is slated to play at numerous amateur events including the North & South Amateur at Pinehurst, the Southern Amateur, the Sunnehanna Amateur and the Western Amateur before wrapping up the busy summer at the U.S. Amateur at Bandon Dunes.
