TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama Athletics placed five student-athletes on the 2020 CoSIDA Academic All-District IV At-Large teams the College Sports Information Directors of America announced this week.
Seniors Daniel Kober and Zane Waddell from swimming and diving and Alexey Nesterov from tennis earned the men's accolade, while seniors Alba Cortina Pou (tennis) and Allie Surrency (swimming and diving) brought home the honor on the women's side of the slate.
Unlike the other Academic All-America teams which represent a single sport, the at-large team spans several men's and women's sports. The women's at-large team includes beach volleyball, bowling, rowing, field hockey, fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo, while the men include fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo, volleyball and wrestling. Each school is also limited to just four men and four women nominees.
A World, NCAA and SEC Champion, Waddell graduated with a double major in Management Information Systems and Finance in May with a cumulative grade point average of 3.76. Kober closed out his career with a 4.0 GPA in Chemical Engineering. Nesterov carries a 3.98 GPA in Finance and Accounting. An All-American, Surrency graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering carrying a 4.0 GPA. Cortina Pou graduated with a 4.0 GPA in Finance and Marketing.
All five student-athletes now move on to the national Academic All-America At-Large ballot.
The five at-large honorees bumped the Crimson Tide's CoSIDA Academic All-District IV honorees to 14 so far this year, joining Landon Dickerson (football), Krystal Goodman (softball), Bailey Hemphill (softball), Jordan Lewis (women's basketball), Nealy Martin (soccer), Alex Plavin (soccer), Kolby Robinson (baseball), Kaylee Tow (softball) and Jedrick Wills Jr. (football).
