
Alabama’s Hemphill and Waddell Named SEC McWhorter Finalists

Softball’s Bailey Hemphill and swimming and diving’s Zane Waddell are in the mix for the Southeastern Conference’s highest academic honor
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Bailey Hemphill (softball) and Zane Waddell (men's swimming and diving) are finalists for the Southeastern Conference's H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Postgraduate Scholarship after being nominated by the University of Alabama the league office announced Tuesday.
The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Postgraduate Scholarship has been presented by the since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes. The Southeastern Conference will name the 2020 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship in late May.

- SEC Record Holder, 100 backstroke, 200 & 400 medley relays, 200 freestyle relay
- Fifth fastest 100 backstroker and has two of three fastest 50 backstroke swims in swimming history

- 2019 World University Games Champion and WUG Record Holder, 50-meter backstroke
The SEC provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year Postgraduate Scholarship recipients with a $20,000 postgraduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship.
The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are announced in May.
