The Pickerington, Ohio, native earned All-America honors on the uneven bars during her rookie campaign
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Alabama gymnast Makarri Doggette was named a Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association All-American on the uneven bars it was announced Tuesday.
"We're so very proud of Makarri and all she accomplished during a stellar freshman season," UA head coach Dana Duckworth said. "She was at her best in the biggest meets and we were all looking forward to seeing what she would do at the championship meets, but I know this is just the start to an amazing career."
Doggette is the 75th Alabama gymnast to be recognized as an All-American since Julie Garrett earned the Crimson Tide's first honor in 1982. Overall, UA gymnasts have brought home 357 All-America accolades.
There are usually two All-America lists – regular-season honors, which are based on national rankings at the end of the regular season, and championship honors, which are based on individual scoring at the NCAA Championships. This year, with competition curtailed two weeks shy of the scheduled end of the regular season and well ahead of the NCAA Championship meets, the regular-season list is based on rankings at the point the season ended and there will be no championship honors.
Doggette finished her rookie season with a 9.905 national qualifying score on the uneven bars. She is the first UA freshman to earn All-America recognition since Mackenzie Brannan in 2015.
The Pickerington, Ohio, native led Alabama on the uneven bars seven times, a tally that included four wins on the event. She was named the Southeastern Conference Specialist of the Week on Jan. 21, after tallying a trio of 9.9-or-better scores against Oklahoma, including a 9.95 to win the uneven bars, a score she matched at Florida, where she also earned the win.
