Crimson Tide slate highlighted by a trio of tournaments in Birmingham along with trips to Cypress Point, Puerto Rico and Mexico
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama men's golf head coach Jay Seawell unveiled the 2019-20 schedule on Friday afternoon, which features trips to the historic Cypress Point Golf Club, along with tournaments in Mexico and Puerto Rico for the upcoming season.
In addition to its travel schedule, Tide fans will be able to watch the nationally-ranked program compete in Birmingham on three separate occasions this year. Alabama will host the Bush Cup which will be held on Sept. 17 at Shoal Creek Country Club, host the 34th annual Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at Old Overton Club on Oct. 7-8 and compete at the Shoal Creek Invitational at Shoal Creek on April 13-14.
"I am excited about the 2019-20 schedule," Seawell said. "It continues our philosophy of great competition at great venues. Our schedule will give our team a tremendous opportunity to compete and develop their skills. We will have a chance to play on six courses that have hosted or will host PGA Tour events. These are courses that will identify where our player development is and will push them to improve their games. Not only the courses but also the other teams that will compete at these tournaments will challenge us to become a great team."
The Crimson Tide will play in a total of five events during the fall season – three in September and two in October – which begins on Sept. 6-8 at the Carpet Capital Collegiate at the Farm Golf Club in Dalton, Ga. It will mark the fifth straight season and the 10th time in the last 11 years that Alabama, who has won the tournament four times including 2017, will open the season at the three-day event.
Alabama will host Army for the fifth annual Bush Cup, a single-day 18-hole match play competition named after the 41st President of the United States George H.W. Bush.
"One new tournament this year which I am excited about is the Bush Cup," Seawell added. "We will host the annual event against West Point at Shoal Creek in Birmingham. This will be an incredible competition but more importantly our guys will interact with the special men of West Point."
Following the Bush Cup on Sept. 17, the Tide will travel to Olympia Fields Country Club just outside of Chicago, Ill., to compete in the challenging Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational on Sept. 20-22.
October will begin with the annual Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which will be held Oct. 7-8 at Old Overton Club in Vestavia, Hills, Ala. Alabama has won the event in 10 of the last 13 years, including capturing the title this past season. The Tide will then close out the fall season when it travels to California to compete at the Cypress Point Classic, which will be held at the world-renowned Cypress Point Club in Pebble Beach, Calif., from Oct. 28-29.
Starting off the spring campaign, Alabama again returns to the Puerto Rico Classic, held at the Rio Mar Country Club, in Rio Mar Beach, Puerto Rico, on Feb. 16-18. The Crimson Tide has won the tournament six times in program history.
Alabama then travels to San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, where it will compete at the Querencia Cabo Collegiate for a second consecutive season on March 1-3. The Crimson Tide will next compete at the Linger Longer Invitational on March 20-22 in Greensboro, Ga. UA will enter this year's event having won five of the last nine Linger Longer team titles.
Back on this year's schedule is the John Hayt Intercollegiate, which will be held on Jacksonville, Fla., on March 29-30. The Crimson Tide will next look to defend its championship at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate on April 13-14, which will also be the final regular season tournament.
Postseason play begins April 22-26 with the SEC Men's Golf Championships held in St. Simons Island, Ga., at the Sea Island Golf Club Seaside Course. NCAA Regionals are scheduled for May 18-20, while the golf season will conclude May 29-June 3 at the NCAA Championships, held at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
