The sophomore’s Honorable Mention All-America recognition from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association is a first for the Crimson Tide program
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama's Jorja Macrae earned All-America honors from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) it was announced Friday.
With the honor, the sophomore becomes the first Crimson Tide rower to earn All-America recognition in the program's 13-year history. The Whataroa, New Zealand native rowed with Alabama's First Varsity 8+ and led the Tide to its first national ranking during the season.
"We're so excited for Jorja and what this represents for our program," UA head coach Glenn Putyrae said. "She exemplifies the hard work and dedication that our team put into this season and the leap we were able to make in the national landscape."
The Crimson Tide also had eight rowers earn a place on the CRCA National Scholar-Athlete list, led by senior Raien Emery, who became Alabama rowing's first CoSIDA Academic All-American in June. Emery was joined by Sydney Boles, McKenna Clark, Ilaria Earl, Sarah Giuliani, Corinne Guay, Darcy Jennings and Rachel Sowell. The Tide's total of eight ranks in the top-25 nationally.
"We are beyond proud of the effort and drive that Alabama rowers put into their academic pursuits," Putyrae said. "That is a long-standing attribute of this program and one that we take great pride in continuing."
The National Scholar-Athlete honors requires that a rower maintain a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career and be a sophomore or better in class standing.
In addition to fielding its first All-American and Academic All-American and posting its first national ranking, Alabama swept a top-20 team for the first time in program history and posted its highest conference finish, taking second at the Big 12 Championships, during the 2018-19 season. In his first season as the Tide's mentor, Putyrae also earned Big 12 Coach of the Year honors, another program first.
