TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama head gymnastics coach Dana Duckworth will be at the Krispy Kreme on McFarland Boulevard this Saturday (June 15) from 7:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., for a ReadBAMARead event.
Co-founder of the childhood literacy initiative, Duckworth and members of ReadBAMARead will be at the store to read some of their favorite books.
"We're excited to be out on Saturday, sharing our love of reading with this community that we love so much," Duckworth said. "Reading isn't just a school assignment, it's something everyone can enjoy year-round. This will be a fun family activity and kids are encouraged to bring their favorite book with them to share."
RBR volunteers will also be on hand selling Lake Tuscaloosa t-shirts with the proceeds helping fund ReadBAMARead's mission of supporting learning and enhancing literacy in the Alabama community.
"ReadBAMARead is proud when we find ways the community can join us in supporting literacy and libraries," Duckworth said. "This is our first fundraiser in 2019 and not only do we encourage the support but these are great looking t-shirts and I love that they represent Tuscaloosa. When you join us on Saturday and make a minimum $20 donation, and/or let your child read with our crew, you can drive away knowing you made a difference and helped us support Tuscaloosa libraries. It's a win-win."
This latest RBR event follows a year that saw the charity donated $25,000 worth of books to Tuscaloosa City middle schools in support of TCS' "Strong Libraries Strong Schools" initiative, as well as providing a number of grants to city and county schools.
In addition to continuing to provide funding for library books to local elementary and middle schools, RBR instituted its ReadBAMARead Express program, bringing books to the youngest students in the state of Alabama's school systems, helping ignite an interest in reading.
About ReadBamaRead
ReadBAMARead is a non-profit organization that was formed within weeks of the devastating April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak that not only ripped through the heart of Tuscaloosa and surrounding cities, but also completely devastated local school libraries. The mission of ReadBAMARead is to support learning and enhance literacy in the Alabama community through a continually growing outreach program designed to get books and resources to the youngest students in our community, helping to encourage and strengthen a love for reading that will lead to greater educational success in their lives.
