Alabama’s Kensey McMahon Posts Top-10 Finish in USA Swimming Open Water National Championships 10K

The All-American freshman finished just over a minute out of first place in the 10,000-meter race
MIAMI, Fla. – University of Alabama freshman Kensey McMahon posted a top-10 finish on day one of USA Swimming Open Water National Championships in Miami, Fla., Friday morning.
The Crimson Tide distance ace posted a time of 2:01.10.10 in the 10,000-meter race at the Miami Marine Stadium to take eighth place, just over a minute off the winning time.
McMahon started her rookie season with the Tide halfway around the world at the FINA World Junior Open Water Championships in Eilat, Israel, where she posted a top-10 finish for Team USA in the 10,000-meter race. Upon returning to campus, she set about rewriting Alabama's record book when it comes to the distance events, breaking both the 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle marks in November at the Georgia Tech Invite. Her school mark in the longest collegiate event made her the first UA woman under 16 minutes in the mile, turning in a 15:59.46.
She bettered both marks at the NCAA Championships on the way to posting Tide's highest individual finish, taking seventh in the 1,650 freestyle. She went out in the mile with a school-record 9:37.62 in the 1,000 before finishing with a school-record mark of 15:53.18 in the 1,650.
Freshmen Nico Hernandez-Tome and Ryan Ratliff took part in the men's 10k on Friday, taking 32nd and 35th, respectively.
The championships continue Saturday with the 5K race. McMahon and juniors Cameron Brown and Alexis Preski will take part in the women's race, while Hernandez-Tome, Ratliff and freshman Nicholas Perera competed in the men's.
