Crimson Tide sophomore finishes play at challenging Blessings Golf Club
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Alabama sophomore Angelica Moresco shot 12-over par 85 in the final round of stroke play competition at the 2019 NCAA Women's Golf Championships on Monday. Moresco completed the 54-hole event and her second national championship appearance at Blessings Golf Club at 20-over par 239 (79-75-85).
The demanding par-73, 6,397-yard course posed many challenges for Moresco and the rest of the 132-player field throughout the day, with its slick greens and severe weather conditions.
"This is a very challenging course, so I have been playing pretty good golf all three days," Moresco said. "It is a very big learning experience. This week I grew a lot. I know now what I have to work on to get up there and be more competitive. It's just a great opportunity to be here and learn from the best in the nation."
Starting on the back nine, Moresco could not register a birdie to mount a charge. The Caldogno, Italy, native found her rhythm midway through the round connecting with seven consecutive pars.
"I am really happy Angelica was able to qualify and play here, it is a very, very demanding golf course," head coach Mic Potter said. "Everything had to be very precise and almost perfect to be rewarded here. We look forward to being back here with the team next year, it's always more fun to have everybody here."
The final place of Moresco's individual standing has yet to be determined, as nine players were unable to complete their round on Monday due to a weather stoppage earlier in the day. Those nine players will resume play at 6:45 a.m. CT Tuesday to complete the individual stroke play portion of the tournament. Stroke play was shortened from 72 to 54 holes as a result of Saturday's weather-induced postponement.
Maria Fassi won the individual national championship by shooting an 8-under par 211 on her home course of the Arkansas Razorback golf team. The top eight teams after the completion of the third round Tuesday morning move on to compete in match play over the next two days for the team national title.
