Crimson Tide volleyball coach Lindsey Devine led the year’s final seminar that was focused on the Leadership Toolbox
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama Athletics DRIVE for Success Emerging Tide Leaders Academy capped its 2018-19 slate of events with a seminar by Crimson Tide volleyball coach Lindsey Devine. It was the final program in the year-long series designed to build up the leadership skills of UA student-athletes.
"I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become," she shared with the ETLA during a wide-ranging talk. Devine, who joined the Crimson Tide in December after 16 years at Eastern Tennessee State, earned a Global Sport Leadership Doctoral in 2018.
During the evening, Devine shared the various characteristics leaders should have within their toolbox in order to be successful.Â
The Emerging Tide Leaders Academy, now in its fifth year, is a two-year leadership development program designed to cultivate and strengthen crucial leadership skills of select student-athletes through empowerment of their leadership ability and encouragement to actively engage learned skills in their everyday environment.
The ETLA curriculum has been developed in partnership with world-renowned leadership expert Dr. Tim Elmore, Holly Moore, Tyler Yaken and Shingirai Chigwere and the acclaimed Growing Leaders program. Â
There are two groups within the Academy - Crimson Catalysts and Legacy Leaders - that through consistent development sessions seek to embrace their ability to positively impact their peers and respective teams, as well as their personal success beyond Alabama.
The Crimson Catalysts is made up of student-athletes in the first year of the program and is focused on leadership training to encourage development of critical skills and knowledge to build active team leaders as well as provide insights, tools, and tactics necessary to effectively guide their peers.
The Legacy Leaders tract consists of those in the second year of the ETLA and concentrates on advanced leadership training for student-athletes to support respective sport programs and enhance personal leadership skills in preparation for positive impact in the professional environment and throughout society.
This year's program included a trio of joint sessions as well as four programs each that were tailored to the two tracts. In between the combined sessions, Jessie Gardner, UA's Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Enhancement facilitated monthly sessions designed to engage, develop, challenge and empower their individual leadership abilities.
The Emerging Tide Leaders Academy is part of Alabama Athletics' DRIVE for Success Career and Leadership Development program's ongoing efforts to provide a strong foundation for the Crimson Tide's student-athletes. Highlighted through the DRIVE acronym the program's values are Dedication, Responsibility, Influence, Vision, and Excellence. Now in its fifth year, DRIVE for Success' mission is to actively support professional and leadership growth of current and former Crimson Tide student-athletes through practical educational workshops, professional events, leadership programs and various opportunities for growth.Â
