Crimson Tide junior women’s golfer in contention for the national honor for the top collegiate female U.S. golfer
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama junior women's golf Juwon Jeon has been named to the latest ANNIKA Award Watch List, Golfweek announced Tuesday. Jeon made the cut when the award narrowed from 25 players in March to 15 student-athletes currently who are in contention for the national honor, which recognizes the top female U.S. collegiate golfer.
Jeon, who is currently ranked No. 6 overall in the latest Golfstat collegiate rankings and No. 9 in the Women's World Amateur Golf Rankings, has had a stellar first season at the Capstone. She currently tops the team in stroke average (71.57) and average vs. par (-0.04) entering NCAA Championship play, which will begin on May 6. Jeon is the only golfer on this year's team to win a medalist honor, doing so in grand fashion when she won the Schooner Fall Classic crown with a 17-under par 196, setting the program record for both 54-hole total and relation to par in a tournament.
Most recently, Jeon led the Tide as she finished tied for fifth during the stroke play portion of the 2019 SEC Women's Golf Championships, closing play at 1-under 215. It was the fourth time this season she finished stroke play with a below-par total. That performance came off the heels of her appearance at the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur last month, which featured the top women's amateur golfers in the world.
On June 7-9, Jeon, a native of Daegu, South Korea, will represent her country as part of the International Team at the Arnold Palmer Cup Invitational which will be hosted by the Alotion Club, considered one of America's premier golf club, located in Roland, Ark. The event is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top men's and women's collegiate golfers matching the United States against a team of International players.
The ANNIKA Award Watch List will be updated one more time this spring. The final Watch List (mid-May) will reduce the list to the top-10 individuals. The winner, which will be determined by players, coaches and members of the golf media, will be revealed in June.
No. 36 Alabama will learn its postseason fate on Wednesday night, April 24, during the 2019 NCAA Women's Golf Selection Show. The show will be televised live on Golf Channel beginning at (4:30 p.m. CT (5:30 p.m. ET).
