FORT WORTH, Texas – Alabama gymnast Abby Armbrecht closed her career in style at the NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, Friday afternoon, earning All-America honors with her final floor exercise routine for the Crimson Tide.
The senior scored a 9.9125 in front of a six-judge panel with a floor routine that included an extremely difficult double layout as her first tumbling pass.
"I went back and forth all week trying to decide whether to do the double pike or the double layout today, and I'm really glad that I went with the double layout," Armbrecht said. "I'm just glad that I got to finish out on a strong note and represent Alabama really well."
Finishing seventh in session one of the NCAA Championships Semifinals earned Armbrecht All-America honors for the first time in her career. She was the only individual competitor to earn All-America recognition on the floor out of the first session.
"Abby really blossomed throughout her career, and this was a true storybook ending for her," UA head coach Dana Duckworth said. "She came in as a shy young woman, who followed her heart to her dream school and, four years later, was able to end her career with an exclamation point with the most beautiful routine of her career, with the most difficulty of her career. It was such a joyous experience being able to watch her do that routine with so much passion, representing the script A and her teammates in that moment."
It was Armbrecht's fifth-consecutive score of 9.900 or better on the floor exercise, a stretch that included all four session of the championship season. It was also her eighth 9.9 or better score over her last 10 floor routines of the season.
A native of Mobile, Ala., Armbrecht adds All-America honors to a resume that already includes Scholastic All-America recognition as well as All-SEC and SEC Academic Honor Roll accolades. She earned her bachelor's degree in marketing last spring and is slated to graduate with a master's in digital and social media marketing in May.
