The Bowerman is collegiate track and field’s highest individual honor
NEW ORLEANS - Alabama junior Shelby McEwen remains entrenched on the men's The Bowerman watch list, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Thursday. The Bowerman is collegiate track and field's highest individual honor.
McEwen opened his outdoor season last week by winning the Crimson Tide Invitational with a clearance of 7-3.25 (2.22m), which ranks him fourth nationally after just one competition. He is one of 10 men from throughout the NCAA, and one of five from the SEC, to earn a place on The Bowerman's mid-outdoor watch list.
The Abbeville, Miss., native, posted the nation's top clearance in the high jump during the indoor season, going 7-7 (2.31 meters), before closing indoors by winning the NCAA high jump championship, with a leap of 7-6 (2.29m), giving him the top-two indoor heights in 2019.
In addition to being a personal-best height, McEwen's 7-7 leap was also just three quarters of an inch off both the school and SEC record in the high jump and put him more than an inch and a half ahead of his closest competitors nationally.
McEwen is also just a quarter of an inch from being the ninth-best performer in collegiate history and three-quarters of an inch from fourth place. This past summer, he finished fifth in the high jump and was the No. 2 collegian at the USATF National Championships.
