Osama won his singles and doubles match in the Crimson Tide’s 4-0 victory
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Senior Mazen Osama played his final regular season home match as No. 20 Alabama dominated No. 47 Arkansas, 4-0, on Thursday night at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
The Crimson Tide's (15-9, 5-7 SEC) victory over the Razorbacks (13-14, 2-9 SEC) concludes its regular season slate and the Tide will wait until Sunday night to see what seed it will receive in next week's SEC Tournament.
"I thought the guys competed really well, " head coach George Husack said. "Arkansas provided a big test for us, but the think we've been focused on the most is competing. We had the long road stretch in March but returning home for these last three matches has been special. We played very well in doubles and to close it out at the No. 3 spot was special. Sam Fischer was our energy bus and both he and Zhe (Zhou) played fantastic and I think that was massive going into singles."
Osama started off his senior night on the right foot by earning a 6-1 doubles win with partner sophomore Patrick Kaukovalta over No. 53 Mesquida/Sanjurjo. After dropping the match at the No. 2 spot, the deciding point came down to sophomore Sam Fischer and junior Zhe Zhou on court three. The duo battled Alonso/Reco to a tiebreaker, before dominating the deciding tiebreak, 7-0, to give UA the 1-0 lead.
The Crimson Tide continued its momentum into singles action with No. 52 Osama cruising to a 6-2, 6-4, win against No. 65 Oscar Mesquida to double the UA advantage. Later on in the match, junior Edson Ortiz battled back after dropping the first set to earn a tough 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, win on court two versus Adam Sanjurjo. On court five, Zhou clinched the match at 4-0 with his straight set victory against Jose Alonso, 6-4, 6-4.
Next up, Alabama will wait to see where it is seeded for the 2019 SEC Men's Tennis Championships set to begin April 17-21 in Gainesville, Fla. Other SEC matches will be going on through Sunday, the Tide will find out its seed in the tournament on Sunday night.
