The Senior earned the honors after clinching a three-match winning streak against nationally-ranked singles opponents
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After a strong opening weekend against Southeastern Conference opponents on the road, All-American Mazen Osama was named the SEC Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon.
For the season, Osama holds a 9-4 mark in dual match play and a three-match winning streak against nationally-ranked opponents after another solid weekend for the Crimson Tide.
Against then-No.18 LSU on March 1, Osama and sophomore Patrick Kaukovalta captured the doubles point for Alabama in exciting fashion, downing the Tigers duo of No. 45 Rafael Wagner and Joey Thomas, 6-4. Osama ranked No. 36 nationally, notched a strong straight-set singles triumph against the Tiger's Shane Monroe at the No. 1 singles position, upending Monroe, 6-2, 6-2, to seal Alabama's SEC-opening victory.
The Cairo, Egypt native, continued his singles dominance Sunday, against Texas A&M's Juan Carlos Aguilar by cruising to a 7-5, 6-2 win.
With the remainder of his senior season still left to play, Osama remains in the top-40 at No. 36 in singles, and as a doubles team Osama and Kaukovalta check into the rankings for the first time this season at No. 17.
Osama and the No. 17 Crimson Tide will be back in action at Lexington, Ky., to face No. 44 Kentucky for its first SEC road match on Friday. The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. CT.
