The Crimson Tide won four-straight in singles play

AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 21 Alabama men's tennis team topped in-state rival Auburn 4-1 at the Yarbrough Tennis Center on Friday. With the win, the Crimson Tide improves to a 13-6 overall record including a 3-4 mark in Southeastern Conference play, while the Tigers fall to 12-13 and 0-7 in league play.

"Super effort today by the team," said head coach George Husack. "The opportunity slipped by us in doubles, but we buckled down and competed very well in singles. The more pride we take in our ability to respond to whatever our opponents give us will allow us to give it right back. We will keep practicing this as we build towards a level we want to be as competitors come late Spring."

The Tide began doubles play down, as the Tiger's Matteo DeVincentis and Filippo Mora defeated sophomore Alexey Nesterov and junior Zhe Zhou, 6-2. Shortly after, junior Edson Ortiz and sophomore Riccardo Roberto took care of business on court three, 6-4, to leave the final decision to court one. In the end, Brandon Laubser and Tad Maclean battled past No. 15 sophomore Patrick Kaukovalta and senior Mazen Osama, 7-5, to clinch the doubles point.

Alabama quickly responded in the start of singles play, as Roberto defeated Laubser 6-3, 6-2 to equalize the match score at 1-1. No. 39 Osama took down DeVincentis 6-1, 6-4, to take the lead. Sophomore Jeremy Gschwendtner went on to outlast Auburn's Michael Durham, 6-1, 6-2, to extend Alabama's match lead to 3-1. Then, Ortiz topped Mora in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, resulting in the final match score.

The Tide will be back in action on Friday, March 29, when it travels to Athens, Ga. to take on the No. 22 Georgia Bulldogs at 4 p.m. CT.
