Crimson Tide to play in a three-day, 54-hole event beginning Sunday
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 15 University of Alabama women's golf team will travel to Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., to participate in the 2019 Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. The event will be played at the par-71, 6,017-yard Palos Verdes Golf Club Sunday through Tuesday, Feb. 3-5.
This will be the Alabama's fifth time competing in the event, which started in 1996 and is hosted by The Ohio State University. The Tide has posted a pair of second-place finishes in the past appearances, which came in 2016 and 2018.
"I've never had as hard-working of a team or a team that wants to do well so badly and as a coach, that's all you can ask for," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said prior to the start of the event. "They come to practice everyday with a goal in mind and we just want to feel like everyday that we've accomplished something by the time we leave."
Eleven programs participating in the 16-team field are ranked in the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Top-25, nine of which are among the top-15 teams in the nation. The field includes the top-two ranked teams in the country in No. 1 USC and No. 2 Texas. In addition to the Crimson Tide, other ranked teams include No. 4 Florida, No. 7 Arizona, No. 8 Stanford, No. 9 UCLA and No. 9 Arizona State, No. 14 Wake Forest, No. 19 Washington and No. 20 Florida State. Other teams participating will be Baylor, Colorado, Furman, Ohio State and Oklahoma State.
The Crimson Tide's top three players all average below a 72.00 scoring average this season. Junior Jiwon Jeon leads the way with a 70.00 stroke average during the fall season, including a 54-hole school record of 17-under par 196 (66-64-66), which she carded at the Schooner Fall Classic to claim medalist honors.
Junior Kenzie Wright (71.90) and sophomore Angelica Moresco (71.70) also average below par throughout the fall season. Rounding out the UA lineup for the spring opener are freshmen Mary Mac Trammell and Carolina Caminoli.
The Crimson Tide will begin play on Sunday morning with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. PT (10:30 a.m. CT). Live scoring throughout the event can be found at GolfStat.com.
