The Pennsylvania native is set to join the Crimson Tide in the fall of 2020
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Three-time Junior Olympic National Championship qualifier and former junior elite gymnast Cameron Machado has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for The University of Alabama gymnastics team.
"Cameron is going to be an awesome collegiate gymnast and we are thrilled she is graduating an entire year early to join the Crimson Tide in the fall of 2020," Duckworth said. "She is hilarious, thoughtful, insightful and wise beyond her years. As I have watched her develop and interact with her teammates, I know she will make a fabulous Alabama gymnast as she is selfless and finds joy in lifting others up."
Machado qualified for the United States Junior Olympic National Championships in 2016, 2018 and 2019. At the 2019 Region 7 Gymnastics Championships, she won the balance beam and took second in the all-around and uneven bars. At the 2016 USA National Championships she finished seventh on uneven bars, 14th on balance beam and 15th in the all-around.
"I chose Alabama because I love the campus, coaches, academic help and team," Machado said, adding that her commitment to the University has been one of her greatest gymnastics accomplishments thus far.
Machado is coached by Slava Glazounov, Brooke Parker, Fernando Pizarro and Paige Schiavone at First State Gymnastics. The daughter of Lisa and Chris Machado, she is a senior at Connexus Academy.Â
"As a Junior Elite, it was evident she had the lines, look and athleticism to be tremendous at the collegiate level," Duckworth said. "We believe her competitive experience along with her uncanny air awareness and maturity will translate into maximizing her untapped talent so her best gymnastics is yet to come. She is an exquisite bar worker, her turns on beam are some of the best in the world in my opinion and she has gotten stronger over time. We look forward to her contributing on all four events."
While Machado will join the Tide in the fall of 2020 for the 2021 season, this year's team will kick off its season on the road at Auburn Jan. 10 before returning to Coleman Coliseum for a marquee matchup with defending NCAA Champion Oklahoma on Friday, Jan. 17. Season tickets are available through the Alabama Ticket Office (205.348.2262) located in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum or online at RollTide.com.
