Alabama Men's Tennis Dominates Day One at Samford Round Robin

The Crimson Tide won 14 of 15 total matches on Friday
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Alabama men's tennis turned in a dominating performance in the first day at the Samford Round Robin on Friday on the campus of Samford University. The Crimson Tide went 3-0 in doubles play, while also winning all but one singles match.
Round-by-Round
- The Tide started the day off right after going 3-0 in doubles competition. Junior Riccardo Roberto and freshman Avi Shugar bested Llinares/Bernard of Troy, 6-1, while junior Sam Fischer and senior Alexey Nesterov, defeated Bellalouna/Rebol of Samford, 6-4. Junior Jeremy Gschwendtner and freshman Marcelo Sepulveda Garza also cruised past Briggs/Faulkner from Belmont, 6-3.
- Alabama continued its dominance in the first round of singles with Sepulveda Garza, Fischer and Gschwendtner all winning in straight sets, while Shugar battled to a three-set victory. Additionally, Nesterov was up in the third set before his opponent retired.
- In round two, all six Crimson Tide players earned wins with Roberto, Sepulveda Garza, Gschwendtner and Shugar coming out victorious in two sets. Fischer won his first set before his opponent retired. Nesterov took care of business in his third set to close out the day.
Tournament Notes
- Collectively, Alabama went 11-1 in the first two rounds of singles play and 3-0 in doubles.
- Nesterov improved his team-leading singles mark to 8-1 with two wins on the day. He is also 7-0 in doubles, also tops on the squad.
- Fischer went 3-0 on the day to start his junior campaign with a doubles win, while cruising to two singles victories.

- Alabama will continue play in Birmingham on Saturday with another round of doubles and singles beginning at 9 a.m. CT. Singles will start not before 12 p.m.
