
Alabama Men’s Golf Splits its Two Matches on Day One at the Cypress Point Classic

The Crimson Tide fell to No. 7 Duke in the morning, but responded with a victory over No. 19 USC in the afternoon
Point Classic on Monday. The Crimson Tide dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 7 Duke in fourball play during the morning session, before responding with a 2-1 victory over No 19 USC in foursomes in the afternoon.
The two-day event features eight teams that are competing in a Ryder Cup-style tournament. Following Monday's two rounds of head-to-head competition, the teams will play singles matches on Tuesday.
Cypress Point is widely considered as one of the most renowned golf courses in the country. The par 72, 6,509-yard Alister Mackenzie Course in Pebble Beach is ranked among the best layouts in the world. In addition to the Crimson Tide, the rest of the field includes host Stanford, California, UCLA, USC, Duke, Illinois and Georgia Tech.
Morning Fourball vs. No. 7 Duke
- The Crimson Tide fell to the Blue Devils, 3-0, to begin the day.
- Evan Katz and Chandler Eaton opened the scoring with a 3&2 victory over Wilson Furr and Simms Abney to open the scoring
- Shortly after the end of the first match, it was Quin Riley and QiWen Wong defeating Frankie Capan III and Thomas Ponder 3&2 to seal the win for the Blue Devils
- Duke's Adrien Pendaries and Steven DiLisio finished off the sweep with a 2&1 victory over Alabama's Davis Shore and Prescott Butler 2&1
Afternoon Foursomes vs. No. 19 USC
- The Crimson Tide defeated the Trojans 2-1 in the afternoon round to give UA a split on the day
- The tandem of Shore and Butler collected a 3&2 victory over Cameron Henry and Leon D'Souza to capture the first match of the day
- Capan and Ponder sealed the victory with a 2up win over Issei Tanabe and Kyle Suppa
- Furr and Abney fell to Yuxin Lin and Kaito Onishi 2&1
Alabama will take on No. 22 Illinois in the fifth-place match, which will consist of singles play on Tuesday morning. The tournament will not feature live scoring but a recap will be provided at the end of each day.
