Alabama Men’s Tennis Completes Day One of Main Draw Action at ITA Regionals

Junior Riccardo Roberto picked up a ranked singles win over No. 91 Boris Kozlov of LSU
AUBURN, Ala. – Junior Riccardo Roberto and senior Zhe Zhou both advanced in the first round of singles play on Saturday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southern Regional Championships in Auburn, Ala. The Crimson Tide also picked up four doubles wins on the day.
Round-by-Round
- Two rounds of doubles started the day with junior Patrick Kaukovalta and Zhou blanking Antuna/Talay of Troy, 8-0, while junior Jeremy Gschwendtner and freshman Marcelo Sepulveda Garza moved past Janko/Safadi of UAB, 8-4. Senior Alexey Nesterov and Roberto also advanced to the second round of doubles with their 8-4 win over Romero/Whittaker of Troy.
- In the next round, Nesterov/Roberto continued their winning ways by moving past Koslov/Watson of LSU, 8-7(4) and into the quarterfinals.
- In singles, Zhou earned a three-set victory over Isaac Becroft of Mississippi State, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, while Roberto defeated No. 91 Boris Kozlov, 6-4, 6-2.
Tournament Notes
- With the ranked win on Saturday, Roberto is now 2-0 against nationally ranked opponents this season. The Padova, Italy native, defeated No. 25 Tim Sandkaulen of Ole Miss back in September and improved his overall singles record to 7-2.
- Nesterov and Roberto are now 5-0 on the year in doubles with their two wins on Saturday.
