BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Following just the third competition of his Crimson Tide career, Bobby Colantonio Jr. was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week by the league office on Tuesday.
Colantonio became the No. 1-ranked freshman in the nation after winning the weight throw with a mark of 21.2m/69-6.75 at the Bob Pollock Invitational. His best throw at the meet moved him to No. 9 in the nation. He is the only freshman ranked among the top-39 nationally. Over his six throws at last weekend's invitational in Clemson, S.C., five went better than 20.2m.
A native of Barrington, R.I., Colantonio was third in his debut competition wearing the crimson and white of Alabama before taking second the next week.
Colantonio and his teammates return to action this weekend at the Carolina Challenge Feb. 1-2 in Columbia, S.C.
