Alabama’s Lauren Stephenson Three Shots Off the Lead After Round 1 at U.S. Women’s Amateur

Stephenson and Kristen Gillman in contention after first day of stroke play
KINGSTON SPRINGS, Tenn. – Alabama golfers Lauren Stephenson and Kristen Gillman opened play with solid first rounds at the 2018 U.S. Women's Amateur in Kingston Springs, Tenn., Monday.
Stephenson fired a 2-under par 69 opening round and is tied for 21st, three shots off the lead heading into Tuesday's second round. Gillman is one shot back at 1-under par in a tie for 31st place.
Both Stephenson and Gillman are making their third consecutive appearance at the U.S. Amateur since joining the Alabama program. Stephenson reached the quarterfinals a year ago while Gillman reached the Round of 32.
Alabama transfer Jiwon Jeon, who will join the Crimson Tide this fall from Daytona State (Fla.), is at 3-over par (74) and tied for 93rd place.
The top 64 golfers after Tuesday's final round of stroke play will advance to match play, which will begin on Wednesday with the Round of 64.
Television coverage of this year's U.S. Women's Amateur at the par-71, 6,365-yard Golf Club of Tennessee, will begin Wednesday at 3 p.m. CT on FS1.
