FORT WORTH, Texas – Rising junior Edson Ortiz reached the finals of the 2018 Oracle ITA National Summer Championships after winning two matches on Monday at the Bayard Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Ortiz will take on familiar foe Jake Van Emburgh (Oklahoma) in the finals tomorrow with the time yet to be announced.
The winner of the match on Tuesday will earn a bid to the ITA All-American Championships main draw in the fall, while both finalists have already gained a wild card spot into the qualifying draw of the tournament.
Earlier in the day in the quarterfinal round, Ortiz moved past a strong opponent in Alex Rybakov (TCU) who is currently ranked No. 517 in the latest ATP World Singles Rankings, 7-5, 6-4, to move to the semifinals before he came from behind to defeat Josh Sheehy (Abilene Christian), 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6), to secure his spot in the finals.
As the No. 11 seed in the tournament, Ortiz began his run by cruising past Casey Ross (Dartmouth), 6-2, 6-3, and Thomas Brown (South Carolina), 6-4, 6-1, to make it to the Round of 16 where he defeated Marius Frosa (Wichita State), 7-6(5), 7-5.
Ortiz and Van Emburgh met last fall at the annual Crimson Tide Four-In-The-Fall, where Van Emburgh got the best of Ortiz, 6-3, 6-2, in the Houndstooth Draw Final.
