Tide freshman wins her opening heat to move on to the next round
TAMPERE, Finland – Alabama's Daija Lampkin sprinted to a time of 11.44 to win her opening heat in the women's 100 meters for the United States at the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, Wednesday morning.
Lampkin's time equals the second-fastest of her career. She ran a personal-best 11.34 at the USA Track & Field Junior Outdoor Championships in June in Bloomington, Ind.
The finish automatically qualified the Middletown, Del., native for Thursday's semifinals, which are scheduled for a 10 a.m. CT start. Lampkin will run in lane 6 in the third of three heats on Thursday. The top two finishers in each heat along with the next two fastest times will advance to Thursday's final, which is slated to begin at 1:15 p.m. CT.
Lampkin's Alabama teammate Tamara Clark will open in the 200-meter heats at 4 a.m. CT on Friday, July 13. Semifinals are scheduled for noon CT on Friday, with the final set for 7:05 a.m. CT on Saturday, July 14.
Lampkin and Clark are also candidates to run on the U.S. 4x100-meter relay in Tampere. Relay heats will begin at 10:05 a.m. CT on Friday with the final set for 8:04 a.m. Saturday.
Alabama's Christian Edwards will compete in the qualification round of the men's triple jump at 10 a.m. CT on Friday for a spot in the final, which will be held on Saturday at 7 a.m. CT.
