Alabama Women’s 4x100-Meter Relay Notches All-America Finish on Final Day of NCAA Track & Field Championships

Crimson Tide women close the 2018 season on a high note Saturday afternoon in Oregon
EUGENE, Ore. – The Alabama women's 4x100-meter relay team posted an All-American finish on the final day of women's competition at the 2018 NCAA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.
The Crimson Tide quartet of freshmen Daija Lampkin and Tamara Clark, sophomore Symone Darius and freshman Demi Washington finished sixth in 44.05 on a cold, rain-soaked Saturday at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. The race caps a 2018 season that saw the Crimson Tide record six of the fastest times in school history in the event.
"We were in lane one so it was a little nerve-wracking because I knew we had to get out," Lampkin said. "I think we adjusted pretty well though and being here in this crowd gives you an adrenaline rush and brings out the best in you as an athlete."
The relay finish also ends a stellar debut season for Lampkin and Clark. In addition to running the first two legs on the 4x100 relay in 2018, the duo excelled in the 100 meters and 200 meters for Alabama throughout the year.
Clark finished the outdoor season as the school record-holder in the 100 and became just the second Tide women's sprinter to medal in both short sprint events at the SEC Championships. The High Point, N.C., native posted a pair of third place finishes along with breaking the school record at this year's conference meet in Knoxville, Tenn.
Lampkin also ran the lead leg on Alabama's 4x400-meter relay that posted three top-10 school times during the outdoor season. The Middletown, Del., native also recorded four 200 meter times indoors that rank among the 10 best in UA history, including a time of 23.02 that ranks No. 2 all-time at Alabama.
"I was very proud of the way the 4x100 ran today," Alabama head coach Dan Waters said. "We ran three freshmen and a sophomore so that just speaks highly of where we're going to be in the future. I think that's one of the things we learned this week with our women's team."
In field event action involving Alabama on Saturday, junior Portious Warren finished 19th in the discus while freshman Jaimie Robinson and junior Tamara Moncrieffe finished 20th and 23rd, respectively, in the triple jump. Warren finished with a top throw of 147-11 (45.08m). Robinson posted a mark of 42-2 ¾ (12.87m) while Moncrieffe's top jump was 40-11 ¾ (12.49m).
Warren ends the 2018 season with school outdoor records in the shot put and discus and the UA indoor record in the shot put in her first season at the Capstone. Moncrieffe finishes her first season with the Tide holding the No. 3 all-time mark in the event in school history. The St. Ann, Jamaica, native also had two other jumps that are among the top-10 at UA. Robinson's top mark this season ranks No. 5 all-time at Alabama.
"We had a lot of people who were here for the first time and I'm sure they were a little more nervous than they anticipated," Waters added. "That's a valuable lesson to learn and we'll take that into next year and it won't be a surprise for anyone. We'll be more focused and more confident about what we're doing."
