Alabama’s Christian Edwards Wins Men’s Triple Jump at USA Track & Field Junior Championships

Victory the first for a Crimson Tide athlete at USA Juniors since 2014
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Alabama's Christian Edwards won the men's triple jump on Day 2 of the 2018 USA Track & Field Junior Outdoor Championships in Bloomington, Ind., Saturday.
Edwards, who took the lead with a leap of 51-2 ¾ (15.61m) on his third jump of the competition, clinched the title with a mark of 52-1 ¼ (15.88m) on his sixth – and final – attempt of the evening. The effort equals his second-best jump of the season.
The win is the first for an Alabama athlete at the U.S. junior championships since Hayden Reed won the men's discus at the 2014 meet in Eugene, Ore., following his freshman season with the Tide.
Hasani Knight of the University of Miami (Fla.) was second at 51-0 (15.54m). Louisiana Tech's Jelaani Davis was third at 49-5 (15.06m).
With the win, Edwards has clinched a spot on the United States under-20 national team that will compete in the IAAF U20 World Championships in Tampere, Finland in July.
The Lake Charles, La., native joins fellow Alabama freshmen Daija Lampkin and Tamara Clark as members of the U.S. U20 teams. Lampkin finished second in the women's 100 meters on Friday to qualify while Tamara Clark finished fourth in the 100 to earn a spot on the U.S. 4x100-meter relay.
Clark was also in action on Saturday, finishing third in the prelims of the women's 200 meters in 22.95 to advance to Sunday's final. A top-three finish in the final would qualify Clark for the 200 meters at the world championships.
In addition to Clark's appearance in the 200 final at 3:15 p.m. CT Sunday, UA freshman Jaimie Robinson will compete in the women's triple jump at 1:45 p.m. CT.
