12-under par day gives the Tide a four-shot lead; Stephenson tied for fourth at 8-under par
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A 12-under par day propelled the No. 1-seeded Alabama women's golf team into the lead following the second round at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional on Tuesday.
The Crimson Tide (282-276/558) is at 18-under par heading into Wednesday's final round at the par-72, 6,342-yard Don Veller Seminole Golf Course and Club.
First round leader Washington (273-289/562) is in second place at 14-under par after a 1-over par second round. Furman (280-283/563) and host Florida State (286-277/563) are tied for third at 13-under par. The Seminoles recorded the second-lowest round of the day at -11. Clemson (285-279/564) is one shot back in fifth at 12-under par. Arizona (290-281/571) is sixth at -5. Wake Forest (285-289/574) is in seventh at -2. The top six teams in the final standings after Wednesday's third round will advance to the NCAA Championships.
"We did a good job when we had to do a good job today," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "There was nothing really outstanding. We just played really solid golf, didn't make any mistakes to speak of and stayed patient. This is a tricky course. It's not enough to be in the fairway here. You have to be in the right spot in the fairway to give yourself a chance on your approach. We've been able to do that the last two days."
Alabama junior Lauren Stephenson (67-69/136) is tied for fourth place individually at 8-under par, two shots behind leader Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest.
Stephenson's second-round 69 was her 17th round in the 60s this season and her 23rd under par in 28 rounds played in 2017-18. The Lexington S.C., native's 36-hole total is the second-lowest in Alabama NCAA regional history, trailing only the 134 shot by Stephanie Meadow in the first two rounds of the 2013 NCAA East Regional at Auburn.
Sophomore Kristen Gillman (72-68/140) and junior Cheyenne Knight (72-68/140) were the low scorers for the Tide on Tuesday. The duo turned in rounds of 4-under par and are tied for ninth at 4-under par after 36 holes.
Freshman Angelica Moresco (71-71/142) was 1-under par for the second day in a row and is tied for 20th. Senior Lakareber Abe (76-75/151) is tied for 60th at 7-over par.
"I thought everyone played well today," Potter added. "I'm really proud of Angelica. She's given us two really solid rounds and that fourth scorer is very important in an event like this."
Wednesday's third round will begin at 7 a.m. CT. Alabama will tee off beginning at 8:50 a.m. CT and will be paired with Washington and Florida State.
