Crimson Tide makes it to the fourth round as a team for the first time since 2014
STILLWATER, Okla. – The fifth-ranked Alabama men's golf team battled its way to a 13-over par 301 in Saturday's third round of the 2018 NCAA Men's Golf Championships, ending the day in ninth overall with a 54-hole total of 10-over par 874 (294-279-301). With its top-15 finish after three rounds, the Crimson Tide advanced to Monday's fourth round of play for the first time since 2014.
"We will learn from today," Alabama head coach Jay Seawell said. "We got punched in the mouth and this is the first time that I remember in which we didn't punch back. I believe in these guys and everything that we have worked for is right there in front of them. We just talked about getting our minds right and we need to wake up tomorrow and execute our golf shots like I know we can."
The field will be trimmed to eight teams after Monday's 18 holes, with the quarterfinals and semifinals of match play being held on Tuesday. The championship match is set for Wednesday morning.
The Golf Channel will broadcast the fourth round of action live, beginning at 3 p.m. CT.
The Crimson Tide battled the golf course throughout most of the day. After carding a then-team course record of 9-under par 279 on Saturday (which was broken when Duke carded a 12-under 276 on Sunday), Alabama was 22 shots worse on Sunday to fall six spots into ninth overall. Furthermore, after four Tide golfers scored par or better in the second round, there wasn't one who shot par in round three.
Four Alabama players are among the top 60 individuals after 54 holes played, led by senior Lee Hodges who is in a tie for 33rd overall with a 2-over par 218. The Ardmore, Tenn., native was on his way to a solid round on Saturday, shooting even par after 15 holes. However, he double-bogeyed No. 16 and triple bogeyed No. 17 to finish with a 5-over 77.
Junior Davis Riley (74-69-77) and freshman Davis Shore (75-71-74) are tied for 46th overall at 4-over 220, while senior Jonathan Hardee is a stroke behind and in a tie for 53rd with a 221 (73-72-76). Freshman Wilson Furr rounds out the Tide in a tie for 102nd with a 227 (73-80-74) on the par 72, 7,460-yard Karsten Creek Club layout.
Alabama will tee off at 1:10 p.m. CT and will be paired alongside No. 2 Texas A&M and No. 29 Kent State. In addition to live television coverage on the Golf Channel beginning at 3 p.m. CT, fans can also follow live scoring at www.Golfstat.com.
