WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Junior Mazen Osama finished his historic run in the NCAA Singles Tournament after falling to No. 1 Martin Redlicki (UCLA), 6-4, 7-5, in the quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Osama ends the season with an 18-8 record, including defeating 12 nationally-ranked foes. The Cairo, Egypt native, became the first Alabama men's tennis player to make it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Singles Tournament, before advancing to the quarterfinals with his 6-4, 6-1, win over No. 47 Runhao Hua (Michigan) in the Round of 16.
"Alabama has a lot to be proud of for a super season as a team and on an individual basis," head coach George Husack said. "Today was a tough one and Martin Redlicki demonstrated why he's the top player in the country. Such a small margin of error for both players. A great effort by Mazen (Osama) not only today but all season. I'm very proud of the noticeable improvements he made as a leader and player. Like our team, he has also set a new standard for himself and now has loftier goals heading into his senior season. As we have said before, this is not the end, this is just the beginning."
After two hour rain delay, Osama began the match with a 2-0 advantage before Redlicki battled back to take the first set, 6-4. In the second set, Osama led 2-1, when Redlicki won three-straight games to go up 4-2. Osama responded with three-straight games of his own to go up 5-4, before Redlicki closed out the match, 7-5.
