WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Junior Mazen Osama became the first-ever Alabama men's tennis player to advance to the Round of 16 after defeating No. 65 Trevor Johnson (TCU), 6-3, 6-0, in the second round of the NCAA Singles Tournament on Thursday morning at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Cairo, Egypt native, earned his third-career win in his second-career appearance in the NCAA Singles Tournament and his 11th victory over a Top 125 opponent this year. With the win, Osama improves to 17-7 in singles play on the season.
Osama's victory over No. 51 Aswin Lizen (UVA) yesterday marked the 16th time in Alabama history that a singles player made it to the second round. Osama advanced to the Round of 32 back in 2016, making him only the second player ever in UA history to make it to the second round twice in two separate seasons.
Next up, No. 10 Osama will play against No. 47 Runhao Hua (MICH) who upset No. 5 Patrick Kypson of Texas A&M in the Round of 32. Hua has a 19-5 singles record in the dual match season. The Sweet 16 matchup will be played tomorrow with a time yet to be announced.
