Junior Mazen Osama becomes the first singles All-American since 2001
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Junior Mazen Osama becomes the first All-American for Alabama men's tennis since 2001 after qualifying as a Top-16 national seed in the NCAA Singles Tournament. Osama and sophomore partner Edson Ortiz also qualified for the NCAA Doubles Tournament. Both tournaments will be held from May 23-28 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Osama currently ranks as the No. 18 singles player in the country, with a 15-7 record, including nine wins over national-ranked opponents. The Cairo, Egypt native, has won four-straight matches against Top 125-opponents, including all three he faced in last week's SEC Tournament. Osama earned a Top-16 seed in the NCAA Tournament to earn All-America honors.
Osama qualification marks the first time an Alabama men's tennis player has been named All-American since 2001 when then-sophomore Maxim Belski finished the season with a 21-12 record in singles play and ended the year at No. 19 in the final ITA rankings.
In doubles, Osama and partner Ortiz currently rank as the No. 30 duo in the country. The pair is 16-7 on the season with two wins over nationally-ranked foes. Osama has earned a bid to the doubles tournament all three years with the Crimson Tide.
