TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's track & field team jumped five spots to No. 3, while the Crimson Tide women check in at No. 23 in the latest U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) outdoor rankings released Monday.
At the Cardinal Classic on April 20, Alabama juniors Vincent Kiprop (13:37.92) and Gilbert Kigen (13:40.99) and senior Alfred Chelanga (13:42.11) finished third, fourth and seventh, respectively, in the invitational 5,000 meters. The times are among the fastest in the nation this season, rank 2-3-4 all-time at Alabama and are personal bests for all three men.
The highlight for the Tide women over the weekend was the performance by thrower Portious Warren at the War Eagle Invitational. The junior was the top collegiate finisher in the shot put with a personal best mark of 56-5 ¾ (17.21m). The shot put effort ranks No. 2 all-time at Alabama, just ¾ of an inch off of the school record. Warren also finished as the runner-up in the discus with another personal best of 164-4 (50.09m).
Alabama will travel to Baton Rouge this weekend for the LSU Invitational on Saturday, April 28. The meet will be the final outing for the Tide prior to the 2018 Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, May 11-13, in Knoxville, Tenn.
