BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The second-seeded Alabama Crimson Tide dropped a hard-fought 3-1-1 decision to third-seeded Arkansas in the semifinals of the Southeastern Conference Women's Golf Tournament Saturday afternoon at the par-72, 6,253-yard Greystone Golf and Country Club Legends Course in Birmingham, Ala.
Freshman Angelica Moresco posted Alabama's lone semifinal win with a 1-and-3 victory over the Razorbacks' Dylan Kim. Junior Cheyenne Knight halved her match with Cara Gorlei. Sophomore Kristen Gillman fell to Maria Fassi, 1 up. Junior Lauren Stephenson drop a 2-and-1 decision to Alana Uriell and senior Lakareber Abe was defeated, 3-and-2, by Kaylee Benton.
"I thought we played well today," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "But so did Arkansas. They made a lot of birdies and several saves. You have to give them all the credit. They're No. 3 in the nation for a reason."
Arkansas will meet No. 1 seed South Carolina for the conference championship on Sunday morning at 7 a.m. The Gamecocks defeated fourth-seeded Georgia, 4-1, to advance to the championship match.
Alabama opened play Saturday morning with a 3-2 win over seventh seed Vanderbilt. Gillman put the Tide up 1-0 with a 6-4 win over the Commodores' Virginia Green. Stephenson followed with a 5-and-3 win over Courtney Zeng. Moresco clinched the match with a birdie on the 17th hole of her contest with Abbey Carlson to win 3-and-1.
Vanderbilt's wins were a 1-up decision by Louise Yu over Knight and a 1-and-2 victory by Morgan Baxendale over Abe.
Alabama entered the weekend ranked No. 2 in the country and will now await the announcement of NCAA Regional selections on April 25. Regional play will take place May 7-9 at four sites – Austin, Texas; Madison, Wis.; San Francisco, Calif. and Tallahassee, Fla.
