Alabama Soccer Falls to UAB, 2-1
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama soccer team dropped a tough match to the UAB Blazers, 2-1, Friday night at the Alabama Soccer Stadium. Junior Abbie Boswell notched the Tide's lone goal of the night on a penalty kick with two minutes left on the clock.
A defensive duel dominated the first half with both teams making impressive saves, including a gut-wrenching stop from junior Kayla Mouton on the goal line at the 17th minute, to end the half in a nil-nil deadlock.
The second half mimicked that of the first with both defenses halting any attacks until the Blazers stormed down the field, beating two Tide defenders and lifting the ball past the keeper to break the tie in the 61st minute.
Mouton would then translate her defensive efforts to the offense, sending a beautiful shot toward the goal with 17 minutes left on the clock, but a UAB defender stopped the ball from progressing any further for the save. Then with 14 minutes left, the Blazers struck again, charging down the field and notching in a goal in the left corner to extend its lead by two.
With two minutes left, Alabama got on board, sinking a penalty kick by Boswell to cut UAB's lead. As the clock winded down, Alabama stayed on the attack, challenging the Blazers' keeper with a shot towards the goal, but it flew high and the Blazers ended the match on top.
Up next, Alabama will wrap up its spring slate on April 21 in a rematch against Florida State at 1 p.m. CT. In the last meeting, the Crimson Tide upset the sixth-ranked Seminoles, 1-0, to give the Tide its first top-10 win in program history on Aug. 27, 2017.
