TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After a close, hard-fought effort in the Crimson Tide Invitational Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Alabama finished second. Despite victories in all but one event, the Crimson Tide was unable to take home first place overall, as Jacksonville edged out Alabama's crew in the 1V8+ A Final. With a tie in total team points, Jacksonville's win ultimately gave them the trophy.
"As a unit, we performed well," UA head coach Larry Davis said, "but overall, I think we can be better. I have to sit down and see what I can do better. Overall, the team did a good job."
Saturday's event was the final home regatta for the Crimson Tide's 14 seniors, who were honored individually after the races. Alabama seniors include Charlotte Adkins, Lydia Blount, Tayla Cabana, Claire Estep, Leslie Feriozzi, Maggie Gillespie, Jacqueline Guezille, Erin Hayes, Danielle Kem, Nicole Lane, Anne Lehmann, Emily Navin, Shannon Sweatt and Lindsey Taylor. The regatta was also the Tide's annual Power of Pink event.
"These seniors are going to be a group we really miss," Davis said. "Day in and day out, they have been one of the most solid classes we've had, in terms of academic and athletic performance. They will be sorely missed, but they've helped our program become better and I wish them the best."
The morning session started with a strong showing from the Varsity 8+ boats. Highlighted by eight seniors in total, Alabama rolled past Creighton to advance to both A Finals where it would meet Jacksonville. As the wind picked up, the Tide continued to assert its dominance, beating out the Dolphins in the Varsity 4+ events. The winning continued in the 3V8+ event, as all three Alabama boats crossed the line with a decided finish over the Dolphins.
"I think all the crews went out and did what they needed to do," Davis said. "I'm pleased with how they have done so far, and now we have to step our game a bit, heading into the Finals."
After a short break, the teams returned to the water for the afternoon session. Led by four seniors, Alabama's 2V8+ crew, Robert E. Witt, highlighted the session with a winning time of 6:36.3. The Tide took care of business in the Varsity 4+ events, beating Jacksonville in both races. Closing out the day, Alabama's three crews in the 3V8+ rolled past the Dolphins, sweeping the top three spots in the race.
"Our 2V8+ did an excellent job in, both the morning and afternoon sessions," Davis said. "They were consistent and very aggressive and that's something as a team we want to do."
In two weeks, Alabama hits the road as it travels to Lawrence, Kan., for the Big 12 Double Dual on April 7.
