McEwen posts best-ever UA high jump finish; Haugh records top Crimson Tide weight throw placement
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS – Alabama recorded best-ever finishes in two events at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on the final day competition on Saturday at Texas A&M's Gilliam Indoor Track & Field Stadium in College Station, Texas.
Junior Shelby McEwen finished third in the men's high jump while senior Daniel Haugh finished fourth in the men's weight throw. Both placements are the best in Alabama history in the two events at the NCAA indoor championships.
The performances also clinched Alabama's second consecutive top-10 finish in the NCAA team standings. The Tide finished ninth with 22 points this year to follow up on an eighth-place finish in 2017, marking the first back-to-back top-10s for the Crimson Tide men since 2001 (fourth) and 2002 (second). Alabama has now finished in the top-10 in its last three NCAA meets – 2017 indoor (eighth), 2017 outdoor (10th) and 2018 indoor (ninth).
"I'm very proud of how our men and women competed this weekend," Alabama head coach Dan Waters said following the meet. "Today was a great way to finish it off. To see Shelby McEwen finish third in the nation in the high jump in his first season of indoor competition is remarkable and Daniel Haugh capped a great indoor career with our best finish in the weight throw. "
McEwen capped a stellar debut season with the Crimson Tide with a third-place finish in the high jump, clearing a personal-best 7-6 (2.29m) for just the second top-five high jump finish in school history. The mark also ranks No. 2 all-time at UA, and is the best for an Alabama jumper at a collegiate meet. McEwen is now one of only two men to clear 7-6 or better indoors for the Tide.
Haugh finished fourth in the weight throw with a season-best mark of 74-11 (22.83m). The effort ranks No. 2 all-time at Alabama. Haugh's finish is his first first-team All-America honor in the weight throw. The Marietta, Ga., native finished ninth at last year's NCAA meet to earn second-team honors.
"We had a great indoor season overall," Waters added. "Winning the SEC men's title was big step forward for the entire squad. We've built a complete program here and I think we'll be even stronger in the outdoor season."
Florida won the men's team title with 40 points. USC was second with 37, followed by Georgia (32), Virginia Tech (31) and Texas A&M (29.5) to round out the top five. Texas Tech (28), Houston (24), Auburn (24), the Crimson Tide (22) and Penn State and Syracuse (tie-18) held down spots 6-10.
The Crimson Tide women tied for 45th with three points. Georgia won the women's team title with 61 points, followed by Arkansas (49), Kentucky (34), Florida (32) and Oregon (31) in the top five.
Alabama will open the 2018 outdoor season at the UTSA Invitational, March 16-17, in San Antonio, Texas.
