Tide women post nation’s second-highest GPA
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama junior Vincent Kiprop has earned 2017 Cross Country All-Academic honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the organization announced Friday.
In addition to Kiprop's honor, Alabama's men's and women's cross country teams were named to the USTFCCCA's 2017 Scholar Teams of the Year list. The Tide women's team GPA of 3.83 was the second-best of the 423 men's and women's teams to make this year's list. The team honors are the fourth in a row and fifth in seven years for both squads under head coach Dan Waters.
Kiprop won the 2017 SEC men's cross country title and earned Men's Cross Country Runner of the Year honors from the league. The Kericho, Kenya, native would go on to earn All-South Region and All-America honors after a fourth-place finish at the regional and a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. He is a general studies major with a 3.80 GPA.
This is the third time Kiprop has been honored by the coaches association for his work in the classroom. He was also a two-time USTFCCCA Division II Scholar-Athlete of the Year honoree at Missouri Southern State University before transferring to Alabama.
In order for individuals to qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of least 3.25 and finish in the top-25 at a regional or as an All-American at the NCAA Championships.
The USTFCCCA has announced a Scholar Team of the Year list since 2006, which recognizes men's and women's cross country teams that finish the year with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. The Crimson Tide men compiled a team GPA of 3.35 while the women's squad posted a GPA of 3.83.
