The duo comes in at No. 22 in the latest Oracle/ITA National Doubles Rankings
TEMPE, Ariz. – The duo of sophomore Edson Ortiz and junior Mazen Osama comes in ranked as the No. 22 doubles pair in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Men's Division I Doubles Rankings on Wednesday, as announced by the association.
In their first season as a duo, Ortiz and Osama have compiled a 6-0 record, including clinching the doubles point in the last two matches. The tandem has been dominant in the No. 1 doubles spot, earning its first win over a ranked opponent by cruising past then-No. 14 Harper/Korsgaard of Virginia Tech, 6-2 on Jan. 26.
Ortiz and Osama have had a crucial part in the Crimson Tide's 9-0 record this season which marks the best start since 2003. Alabama has dominated in its first nine matches of the season by shutting out six opponents and has received national votes in the latest Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Men's Division I National Team Rankings.
Osama is no stranger to being ranked in doubles as he and partner Spencer Richey finished the 2017 season as the No. 15 pair in the country. In his freshman campaign, the Cairo, Egypt native, and partner Korey Lovett made Alabama history by achieving the highest doubles ranking in the program's existence at No. 4.
Alabama men's tennis returns to action for three matches this weekend inside the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Indoor Tennis Facility. The Tide will take on Pepperdine on Friday, Feb. 9, before playing in a doubleheader on Sunday, Feb. 11 against San Diego State (1 p.m.) and Lipscomb (6 p.m.).
