The Crimson Tide junior honored after meet-winning performance at the New Mexico Classic
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama junior Shelby McEwen has been named the Southeastern Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
McEwen won the high jump at the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, N.M., on Feb. 2 with a clearance of 7-4 ¼ (2.24m), a mark that currently ranks No. 5 nationally and No. 2 in the SEC. The effort also ranks second all-time at Alabama, surpassing his earlier indoor personal best of 7-3 (2.21) set at Clemson's Bob Pollock Invitational on Jan. 27, which was the previous No. 2 school mark.
McEwen is the second Tide athlete to receive field athlete of the week honors this season. Senior thrower Daniel Haugh was honored on Jan. 16 for his performance at the UAB Blazer Invitational.
McEwen and his Crimson Tide sprint and field event teammates will be in action this weekend at the Tiger Paw Invitational, Feb. 9-10, in Clemson, S.C., while the UA distance squad will split between the Iowa State Classic and Vanderbilt's Music City Challenge this weekend.
