Freshman Casey Wertz notches pair of goals to blank the Tigers
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama soccer team shut out Memphis, 2-0, in its spring season opener Saturday afternoon at the Alabama Soccer Complex. Freshman Casey Wertz knocked in both of Alabama's goals in the first half to secure the win.
In the opening minutes, the Crimson Tide charged down the field and got on board early after Wertz notched in a goal assisted by freshman Lily Truong for the 1-0 lead. Then in the 12th minute, Wertz pushed the Tide's lead to 2-0 after heading in a goal off an Emma Welch corner kick.
In the second half, both teams tried to muster up the right offensive attacks, but redshirt freshman Alex Plavin and the Crimson Tide defense were able to fend off the Tigers to complete the shutout.
Up next, Alabama will hit the road to face Clemson March 3 at Historic Riggs Field. The Crimson Tide faced the Tigers in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament and fell, 2-1.
