
Edson Ortiz and Zhe Zhou Advance to Finals of Respective Singles Draws in CCB Collegiate Invitational

Ortiz and Zhou will play in their separate finals at 10 a.m. on Sunday
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After winning two singles matches each on Saturday at the CCB Collegiate Invitational, juniors Edson Ortiz and Zhe Zhou will play in their respective singles draw finals on Sunday at 10:30 a.m., at the Country Club of Birmingham.
Zhou first defeated Max Lapraille (South Alabama), 6-2, 7-5, before he moved onto the finals with a win over Yusuf Khamis (ETSU), 6-2, 6-0. The Tianjin, China, native will compete against Stijn Slump (Middle Tennessee) in the White Draw final.
Ortiz won in a three-setter against Kento Yamada (Kentucky), 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, before cruising to a 6-1, 6-1, victory against Tim Ruetzel (Tulane) to make it to the finals of the Crimson Draw. Ortiz will play Frazier Rengifo (ETSU) in the final tomorrow morning.
Sophomore Sam Fischer dropped a tough three-set match to Santiago Di Loreto (South Alabama), 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, and then fell against Tom El Safadi (UAB), 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8). Fischer will play in consolation tomorrow versus Mieszko Kwasniewski (Southern Miss).
Doubles play will start the day on Sunday at 9 a.m. with Ortiz/Zhou taking on Kotorman/Ruetzel (Tulane), while Fischer/Rebol (Samford) will play against Akhtar/Manchev (UAB). Singles competition will follow the completion of doubles play.
