Alabama’s Robert Howard earns SEC Swimmer of the Week Honors for Third Time This Season

The Alexander City, Ala., native is the nation’s fastest in the 100 freestyle, ranks second nationally in the 50 freestyle and sixth in the 200 freestyle after a fast weekend in Atlanta, Ga.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – For the third time this season, Alabama senior Robert Howard has been named the Southeastern Conference Swimmer of the Week the league office announced Tuesday.
Howard holds the fastest 100 freestyle in the nation after last weekend's Georgia Tech Invitational. He is ranked second nationally in the 50 freestyle and sixth in the 200 freestyle, all with times posted at the Georgia Tech meet. The Alexander City, Ala., native also posted the fastest 100 relay split in the country with a 41.09 on the end of UA's winning 400 freestyle relay in Atlanta. Howard made up nearly a second on Florida State, out-touching the Seminoles to secure the win.
The All-American and Academic All-American clocked a 41.94 in the 100 freestyle, making him the only swimmer under 42 second in the NCAA this season. Howard's winning 50 freestyle time of 19.23 is just .04 off the nation's best time and his 1:33.60 in the 200 freestyle is a career-best mark.
He was also part of all five of Alabama's top relay squads last weekend, all of which rank in the top-10 nationally. The Tide is second nationally and first in the SEC in the 200 medley relay, third nationally in the 200 freestyle relay and fourth in the 400 freestyle relay.
Howard and his teammates return to action Dec. 7 at 4:30 p.m. against Auburn in the Alabama Aquatic Center.
