Crimson Tide Finds Success in Singles Play on Day One at CCB Collegiate Invitational

Fischer, Ortiz and Zhou all advanced in singles on Friday
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Sam Fischer and junior Zhe Zhou both won their singles matches, while junior Edson Ortiz earned a first-round bye on Friday at the CCB Collegiate Invitational.
Zhou cruised to a 6-2, 6-3, victory over David Faulkner (Belmont) in the White draw and will advance to take on Max Lapraille (South Alabama) tomorrow at 9 a.m., while Fischer won in straight sets over Jacob Pugh of (Middle Tennessee), 6-4, 6-2, in the Houndstooth draw. Fischer will move on to play Santiago Di Loreto (South Alabama) at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Also in the second round, Ortiz will play Kento Yamada (Kentucky) at 9 a.m.
In doubles action, Ortiz/Zhou battled to an 8-7(5) win over Huempfner/Penzkofer (Kentucky), before falling to Fontcuberta/Gonzalez (ETSU), 8-4.
Fischer/Max Rebol (Samford) lost to Fruh/Di Loreto (South Alabama), 8-6, before bouncing back with an 8-3 victory against Penny/Skrabut (Lipscomb).
The tournament continues tomorrow with two rounds of singles competition beginning at 9 a.m. The event wraps up on Sunday with a final round of doubles at 9 a.m., followed by the last round of singles.
