Shugar signs national letter of intent with Alabama
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's tennis team added Avi Shugar from Eugene, Oregon to the program head coach George Husack announced on Thursday.
"Avi is a tremendous fit for our program," said Husack. "We learned a lot about him during the recruiting process both as an athlete and as a person. He has a such a supportive family that has shaped him into the young man he is today. When you get a great feel about someone on and off the court, as well as how they represent themselves and their family name, then it's a green light all the way."
Shugar will join the Crimson Tide as a freshman following his graduation ceremonies. Off the court Shugar attends Lincoln High School and is registered in an International Baccalaureate Program, which is a pre-collegiate curriculum that will prepare him for Alabama's Honors College.
The four-star recruit according to TennisRecruiting.net, has been nationally ranked as high as No. 82 on TR.net in Boys U18. Under the guidance of coaches Paul Reber and Aaron Gross, Shugar has been ranked as high as No. 3 in the USTA Sectional Ranking in Pacific Northwest Boys 18s, and No. 68 in USTA National Ranking in Boys 16s.
"Avi has made notable sacrifices to enhance his game over the past couple of years, while also being challenged in a rigorous academic program," stated Husack. "The skill sets he has learned and utilized to succeed during this time will make an immediate impact to our program. We are all excited to have Avi here at Alabama."
