The Pickerington, Ohio, native is the second gymnast in history to win all four individual events and the all-around at the USA Junior Olympic National Championships in a single year
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – A four-time member of the USA Junior Olympic National Team, Makarri Doggette has signed a national letter of intent to compete for The University of Alabama gymnastics team, head coach Dana Duckworth announced Wednesday.
"Makarri's accolades speak for themselves," Duckworth said. "She is one of the most accomplished gymnasts in the Junior Olympic world. She is an awesome human being with an amazing heart. She truly loves the sport of gymnastics and is beyond prepared to be an influential teammate."
A nine-time USA Junior Olympic National Champion, including two all-around titles, Doggette is coached by Kittia Carpenter, Li Li and Gabe Milam at Buckeye Gymnastics. She won the national J.O. titles in the all-around and all four individual events in 2018, while also winning the all-around, vault and floor exercise in 2017. Doggette is just the second gymnast in history to win all four individual events and the all-around at the J.O. national championships in the same year.Â
"I chose Alabama mainly because of the coaching staff," Doggette said. "I felt a really strong connection with them immediately and knew I would be well taken care of. I also fell in love with the campus the second I got there and felt at home."
The Pickerington, Ohio, native is a member of the National Honor Society. A senior at Pickerington Central High School, she carries a 3.8 cumulative grade point average. She is the daughter of Rebeckah and Cecil Doggette.
"Makarri is an excellent student and models everything that it means to be an Alabama gymnast," Duckworth said. "She will bring exquisite power, talent and consistency to collegiate gymnastics. She was undoubtedly one of the best recruits in the country and we are thrilled that she is joining the Alabama gymnastics family."
While the Tide's latest addition to its gymnastics family gets her start with the 2020 season, this year's squad gets things underway on January 4 in Coleman Coliseum. Season tickets are available through the Alabama Ticket Office (205.348.2262) located in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum or online at RollTide.com.
