Alabama’s Zane Waddell Named SEC Swimmer of the Week

The Crimson Tide sprinter earned the first weekly honor of the 2018-19 season after opening the year with four individual wins over two meets
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama junior Zane Waddell has been named the first Southeastern Conference Swimmer of the Week of the 2018-19 season the league office announced Tuesday.
Waddell has roared into his third season at Alabama, winning four individual events in his first two dual meets and ranking among the top-10 nationally in four different events.
The All-American took top honors in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly at Ohio State and was first in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly against Delta State.
He is ranked first in the SEC and fourth nationally in the 100 backstroke (47.73) and 100 freestyle (44.02). He is also the only SEC swimmer outside of teammate Laurent Bams to rank in the top-10 nationally in the 100 freestyle.
Showing off his diversity, Waddell is ranked eighth nationally and second in the SEC in the 100 butterfly with a 48.17. He is also 13th nationally and second in the SEC behind teammate Robert Howard in the 50 freestyle with a 20.45.
Waddell and his teammates return to action Saturday, Oct. 20 against SEC rival Texas A&M at 10 a.m. in the Alabama Aquatic Center. Admission is free.
