Freshmen Rhyan White and Kalia Antoniou will both compete in Buenos Aires during the six-day schedule of swimming events
BUENOS AIRES – A pair of University of Alabama swimmers are taking brief timeout from their freshman season at the Capstone to compete at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina this week.
Freshman Rhyan White will represent the United States in the six-day event, while classmate Kalia Antoniou is representing her native Cyprus.
The Summer Youth Olympic Games is an elite, international multi-sport event for athletes between the ages of 15 to 18, with 1,999 women and 1,999 men expected to compete in 32 sports.
White has gotten off to a very hot start for Alabama this season, picking up five individual wins in her first two meets, including a three-win performance on the road at Ohio State. Antoniou has also gotten into the win column in her first Crimson Tide meets, including a win in the 50 freestyle to open the season against Delta State.
White and Antoniou are the latest Crimson Tide rookies to compete internationally this fall. Fellow freshman Kensey McMahon swam for Team USA at the World Junior Open Water Championships in Israel in September, where she posted a top-10 finish in the 10,000-meter race. McMahon is also off to a hot start to her first collegiate season, winning three individual events in her first two meets, including an undefeated record so far in the 1,000 freestyle.
Not content to let the freshmen have all the international-meet fun, junior Zane Waddell is slated to represent his native South Africa at the 2018 FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships, which will be held Dec. 11-16 in Hangzhou, China. After a big summer, the sprinter is slated to compete on the world stage in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle and the 50-meter backstroke.
