
Three Alabama Players Advance to Qualifier Finals at USTA $15k Futures

Edson Ortiz, Jeremy Gschwendtner, and Riccardo Roberto won their matches on Sunday
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior Edson Ortiz, along with sophomores Jeremy Gschwendtner and Riccardo Roberto, all advanced to the qualifier finals at the USTA $15k Futures event in Birmingham, Ala., on Sunday.
Ortiz dominated the No. 3 seed in the qualifying tournament in Teodor Giusca, 6-0, 6-2, while Gschwendtner won the first set against Daniel Janko 6-1, before Janko retired. Roberto bested Eduardo Mena Rodado, 6-4, 7-6(6). No. 16 seed junior Alexey Nesterov fell in his match against Sergey Belov, 6-4, 6-4.
Play will continue tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT with Gschwendtner and Ortiz facing each other for a spot in the main draw, while Roberto plays Julian Zlobinsky.
